Board-certified orthopedic surgeon, James D. Bookout, MD, brings over two decades of experience in orthopedic surgery, general surgery, and adult joint reconstruction to Associated Orthopedists of Detroit PC in St. Clair Shores and Shelby Township, Michigan, serving patients throughout Macomb County.

Dr. Bookout began his professional education at the University of Wisconsin in Madison, earning his Bachelor of Science in biology and chemistry. Then, he enrolled at Wayne State University in Detroit, achieving his Doctor of Medicine.

​

After graduation, Dr. Bookout completed a general surgery internship at William Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak in Michigan, and a residency in orthopedic surgery before moving to Minnesota. Dr. Bookout then participated in post-residency training at Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis, specializing in adult joint reconstruction.

Dr. Bookout is Chief of Orthopedics at William Beaumont Hospital - Grosse Pointe and holds staff privileges at Henry Ford Macomb Hospital - Clinton Township and Henry Ford - Cottage Hospital in Grosse Pointe Farms, all in Michigan.

Dr. Bookout is a member of the Mid-American Orthopaedic Society, Fort Wayne Medical Society, Indiana State Medical Association, and Wayne State University School of Medicine Alumni Association. Dr. Bookout is board-certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery.

Dr. Bookout is a proud United States Navy veteran who served as a general medical officer. When Dr. Bookout isn't meeting with patients or augmenting his professional skills, you can find him watching or playing hockey. Dr. Bookout's passion for the sport even saw him act as team physician for the Fort Wayne Komets, a United Hockey League team.
